"The holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico."
Commercial interests in the United States have capitalized on the
celebration, advertising Mexican products and services, with an

I've gotten some positive feedback, and also tomorrow is the Stomp, so I went a bit nuts...
It's a rainy Free Comic Book Day here in Toronto so at first I sang a bunch of sad songs: "Melancholy Melody" by Esthero (I fucked up the words at one point, oops, now you get to hear me giggle and feel retarded), two songs I've heard Jeff Buckley cover: "Calling You" and "The Other Woman", and then because it was getting too heavy, I did my all-time favourite Beatles song, "Martha My Dear". Can someone…

I like singing a lot
I have minimal training — never got past the "this is how you breathe" part
I like good music.
My mom's laptop has Garage Band
Sometimes I sing in the kitchen while I'm microwaving some dinner
Okay really I sing all the time.
I hit record this time and here you have it, the first of hopefully many hax trax, when I hax0r good music and sing it myself, by myself, in my house.
You get to hear not only me, and my intermittent snapping, but also my microwave beeping and Ad…

A WEEKS WORTH OF BLOGS
Current mood: animated
Category: Blogging
Everyone uses Twitter for a dozen different reasons. I use it as a 140 key stroke limited blog. o type out the absolute amounts of BS that flows through my mind.
Some times I use it to make sure I remember a quote or a song lyric.
But usually I just type the petulance that seems to enjoy living and breeding in that alcohol addled brain of mine. So here you go...one weeks worth of the udder nonsense that seems to grow and thrive…

A thousand and one thank-yous to everyone who came to Hush last night and rocked out with Matt and I. We kind of had a lot of fun.
Now, some things on The Internet need to be mentioned here.

NAWLZ is the first one. It's a cyberpunk styled webcomic, done all in Flash, with lots hidden cues, flat out amazing art, a soundtrack, and acres of style. The story is a…

Jesus, I know I'm not generally web-social and I have a boring life but I thought I could do more here than I have. The fact there are actual competent writers here doesn't help but, you know, I should at least try.
I've just returned from celebrating ANZAC day in Sydney, For those non-Australians and non-Kiwis, ANZAC day commemorates the day we landed huge numbers of troops on the shore of Gallipoli in Turkey in order to have them mown down by Turkish gunners. Despite that, we established a bea…

The internet is all abuzz this week about Aliza Shvarts, a Yale student who issued a press release claiming that she artificially inseminated herself, then took various herbs in order to induce a miscarriage. Repeatedly. Yale responded with a release stating that Shvarts was a performance artists, and that her announcement had been the art piece, forcing people across the world into a discussion of what is and what isn’t art. Shvarts has since released another statement claiming that at least po…

Many moons ago, back in the mid to late eighties, a friend of mine was directing a college production of Jesus Christ, Superstar. He invited me to opening night.
Now, this production ends with Christ on the cross, ascending to heaven. They had built a mechanical cross, that would rise slowly and dramatically, up past the curtain line. For opening night, several cages of doves had been hung above that curtain line, and as Christ rose past them, the cages would open and the doves would fly out ov…

Current mood: ecstatic
Yesterday my baby sister became a mother.
Well, OK she’s been a mother for a while now, but Ethan finally decided enough was enough and said "LET ME SEE THE WORLD!!!"
So yesterday my nephew, Ethan Robert, was born. I have never seen a more beautiful baby boy in my life. This little whopper came into the world at 8lbs and some ounces and at a staggering 21 inches, AND HE IS BEAUTIFUL.
I held him for the first time today.
I have never held "hope and promise" in my arms…

R. Murray Schafer came by UVic on Friday, to talk about his string quartets, about soundscapes and sonic ecology, and about his approaches to composition in general. I was right with him on just about everything he said, until he was asked about why he still composes in longhand when programs like Silbelius and Finale exist. (Easy answer: he has lovely penmanship.)

I have a single box for storing comics which is nearly full, and don't want to buy another one. So the question is what do I do with old comics I don't read any more (Civil War, USM etc.)? Is it worth selling them on eBay, or donating them to somewhere, or what? I don't particularly want to throw them away, but I want more space in the box.

Creative flows achingly through my veins. I want to draw a picture of a tired girl with a smile, of quiet, honest girl who sobs in the shower whose hair is falling out in clumps, I want to draw a picture of a couple slung far and wide by distance, and the lovers who never meet, I want to draw a picture of a girl who is dying inside but doesn't show it, but all of these are looking more and more like a self portrait.
I'm not emo or looking for consolation; I'm hanging on in quiet desperation, so…

I've had two people do unusually kind things for me recently. The first was a person who I met online, who was kind enough to send me a rather old (but fully functional) IBM Thinkpad worth about £80 for the price of postage. The second was someone I've known IRL for a while, who offered to lend me £75 so I could get out of a hole that I had dug for myself.
I've no particular reason for mentioning this, it's just nice when people make a difference to you.

No, seriously, don’t fuck with Stravinsky. I mean, just look at him. He’ll cut you.
I just got in from seeing and hearing the UVic Orchestra hurl themselves through Stravinskys’ Firebird and Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony. Both were fantastic. I think I prefer Stravinsky to Pyotr Ilyich, but it’s a near thing. I did like, however, the positively sepulchral final movement of the Tchaikovsky. More large s…

Walked into WH Smiths in Holborn this morning in a vain attempt to buy the new Nick Cave album. They really can't be bothered with CDs any more in there, so that was a pointless exercise.
But, by the book display, there's a large cardboard shipper bearing the title 'Tragic Life Stories'. It's full of child abuse autobiographies, and has a picture of a damaged-looking woman staring out to sea at the top.
I find something about this utterly appalling, but I can't quite figure why... not that som…

Something about swimming relaxes me. And I’m not even that good at it. Just being in the water and feeling weightless eases my mind. It helps me think. So I went to the pool to try and come up with a game plan for when Walter finally showed up. As I lay there, floating on my back, the thinnest wisps of a course of action started to form. But it would depend heavily on who Big Chris was willing to side with; Walter, who had treated him as dumb muscle all his life, or me, who had treated him like…
